We all know how hard it can be to plan a trip with family and friends when you all have different opinions and budgets. That’s why solo travel has become increasingly popular in recent years. A recent survey by Solo Traveler World says that one in four people will solo travel in 2018. Not only is solo travel empowering, but it allows you to freely plan what you want to do on vacation. The U.S. is home to several solo travel-friendly destinations and America By Rail can help get you there. Here are some of the best destinations within the U.S. that are perfect for those traveling solo.

New York City, New York

New York City has it all – shopping, modern and classic art, food, theatre and more. There’s something in the Big Apple for everyone which makes it ideal for any solo traveler. You may think NYC’s crowds will be overwhelming for a solo traveler. However, New York City is a huge tourist hub and those who work in shops and restaurants are usually willing to help you with directions. Once you get a hang of the different boroughs and the subway system, the city isn’t hard to navigate. You can also spend time in the quieter areas like Greenwich Village and Central Park if you want to get away from the crowds. New York City does run a free Big Apple Greeter program too where real New Yorkers volunteer to show visitors around the city.

Portland, Oregon

Portland is a great destination for solo travelers because the city is bikeable, walkable and the public transportation is easy to navigate. Other than transportation, Portland is known for its eclectic neighborhoods, healthy lifestyles, and creative people. Sedona is home to several parks and scenic canyons like Red Rock State Park, Slide Rock State Park and Oak Creek Canyon. In town, you’ll find several art galleries that feature Native American inspired works and day spas if you’re looking for a bit of R&R during your trip.

Anywhere in Alaska is great for solo travel but, if you’ve never been before, Juneau is a good starting point. You’ll find yourself captivated by the natural beauty of this state.
