Today is World Health Day and to celebrate we’re counting down the America’s healthiest cities to visit from the east to the west coast. During your vacation it is possible to relax and unwind, while still maintaining your healthy lifestyle. Here are some of the best health conscious cities to visit on your next vacation.

1. Denver, Colorado

With 300 sunny days a year, Denver is the perfect city to spend your days outside. With endless activities to keep you fit including skiing, hiking, mountain climbing, biking, and yoga, Denver is one of the top healthiest cities out there. For yogis, there is the annual Yoga Rocks the Park series from June through September, which features weekly events with concerts and even yoga camps for kids. When visiting Denver, check out one of the healthiest restaurants in the city, Alex Seidel’s Fruition. Seidel stocks his kitchen with vegetables and eggs from his own farm and serves dishes like Alaskan halibut cheek en papillote with saffron-cioppino broth.

2. San Francisco, California

San Fran is anything but flat, with steep natural inclines and endless uphill strolls, getting exercise is effortless. Walk the streets and take in the sights while you get your heart rate pumping. For a very rigorous work out, visit the steep stairs along the city’s famously crooked Lombard Street. For healthy eating, visit Plum, owned by Daniel Patterson in nearby Oakland. Patterson emphasizes dishes heavy on grains and vegetables, including plates like bourbon barley risotto with celery root, lemon, and kale.

3. Portland, Oregon

Portland is full of parks, large and small, where guests can run, hike, or mountain bike on 75 miles of trails. Also home to the Interlakes Trail at Smith and Bybee lakes, the largest protected wetlands in an American city, Portland is the perfect place for wildlife watchers. There are also Columbia River kayaking rentals and classes offered at the Alder Creek’s Jantzen Beach Store. For some refueling, visit The Bent Brick which focuses on vegetables in small plates, like parsnips and carrots with rye berries, brown butter and sage. Even the cocktails are made with locally made spirits.

4. Austin, Texas

Austin is full of green spaces, including the 351 acre Zilker Park and the 200 biking, hiking, and running trails. There are multiple beautiful golf courses, including Barton Creek Resort. Visit Uchi for delicious fresh fish inspired dishes like Uchiviche (salmon and striped bass with tomato and bell pepper) or Yokai Berry (Atlantic salmon with dinosaur kale, Asian pear and yuzu).

5. Washington, DC

The US capital is a walking city, where you can burn calories while taking in America’s history. It is also a running city, with City Running Tours that lead groups on five-mile jogs around Georgetown or Capitol Hill. Proof has a Mediterranean-inspired menu that focuses on vegetable dishes like buttercrunch lettuce with avocado, grapefruit, Valencia orange and toasted quinoa, and a napoleon of crispy tofu with wild mushrooms and root vegetables.
