Being able to witness the seasons change right before our eyes is a privilege to have. One of the most beautiful times of the year is coming up: fall. Fall is the season where the air becomes crisper and leaves change from cool shades of green to warmer colors like red, yellow, and orange. Fall peaks from mid-September through October.

Fall is one of the perfect times to travel to places you’ve always wanted to visit. Fall is sometimes considered the off season for popular vacation spots. Not only does that mean that your fall travels could be cheaper, but you get to visit popular places when they are dazzling with beauty and have fewer people. If you are interested in seeing the world at the peak of fall, here are top places that we stop at, and you should too, during the fall months all across the United States.

Alaska

Alaska in the fall is a perfect vacation spot for those who enjoy looking at wildlife and a clear night sky. During the fall, Alaska has improved chances of wildlife sightings and seeing aurora lights in the sky during the evening. A popular place to see grizzly bears, wolves, moose, caribou, and sheep is Denali National Park. Visitors to Alaska at this time also enjoy fishing for salmon.

Colorado

The Colorado Rockies are brightened up with yellow and orange leaves during fall. Locals of Colorado recommend hiking in the fall because of how pretty the fall leaves look. If you go hiking throughout Estes Park, you could spot elk roaming around since they tend to come out during fall. Colorado has many parks and roads to take scenic drives through to view the beauty of the fall foliage. The leaves aren’t the only scenic thing you could see in Colorado in the fall. There are also sunsets so pretty that people go on tours to see them.

Michigan

Michigan experiences all four seasons and it experiences them well. The Upper Peninsula becomes even prettier with the color changes of the leaves, and there are a lot of color tours going on during this time. If you are in the right spot, you can see amazing sunsets on the beach and possibly spot northern lights in the evening. Fall in Michigan is also a lot of fun because there are plenty of cider mills to visit and the college towns look amazing during this time.

New England States: Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, & Rhode Island

The states located in the New England area are known for having the best fall foliage scenic views. We love the view so much that we offer a New England rail tour so that you can see it too! True “leaf peepers” come to the New England states to take scenic drives and to check out the white mountains of New Hampshire in the fall. The scenic drives are so popular that sometimes they can get a little crowded. A tip on how to see the fall foliage is to take the back roads instead of the most popular scenic driving routes.

New Mexico

One of the most popular tourist attractions of New Mexico happens in the fall: the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. This event attracts people from all over the world. On our Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta train tour, we offer a day spent at the Balloon Fiesta. Another reason that you should take a fall vacation to New Mexico is because of chile roasting! The early months of fall are when the chile season is. There are also plenty of beautiful locations to view the colors of fall in New Mexico like Carson National Forest, the Rocky Mountains, and the Albuquerque Bosque Trail.

New York

Central Park is bursting with fall colors during the fall season. Central Park is known for holding events during this time so that guests can take in the beautiful color of the leaves. There is also a lot of other events happening in New York during the fall time including New York Fashion Week, film festivals, and other artsy festivals.

Utah

If you love to take scenic drives, then Utah is the vacation destination for you. These are popular places that you will want to take a scenic drive through: Mirror Lake highway, Fish Lake scenic drive, and Odgen River Scenic Byway. They are located in highly elevated places that capture a great view of Utah in the fall.
