PACKING
Apparel for aboard the train is casual -- slacks, sport shirts, sweatshirts and sweaters. Be sure to take warm clothes and outerwear. Dress for the trains in terms of layers. If it gets too warm, you can shed your sweater or jacket; if it gets too cool, you can add accordingly.
Be sure to bring comfortable, durable walking shoes. Rainwear is advisable, including waterproof footwear.
Now that you have your clothes selected, how do you pack them? We are providing each person with one America by Rail tag for a bag to be checked. We ask that the size and weight of your America by Rail-tagged bag not exceed 28H X 22W x 13D and 40 pounds. We recommend husband/wife pack separate bags, as the combined bag often exceeds the size and weight limits.
The overnight bag, for which you are responsible, must be a smaller type. This bag will remain with you and could contain overnight items, toilet articles, medications, extra clothing, books, snacks, etc. Do not place the America by Rail tag on your overnight bag.
A hat to protect you from the sun, sunglasses, sun block, binoculars, camera and a personal music (mp3) player are additional items you may want to bring. Bring along a good book (or books on tape so you don’t miss the scenery), playing cards or a board game such as Scrabble. Some travelers enjoy having AAA-style road maps or a small atlas with them.
FOOD SUGGESTIONS
All dining car meals are included for our travelers. In addition, all trains have snacks in the lounge cars. Alcoholic beverages are also available.
Many of our travelers take snacks on the connecting trains. Nuts, chips, crackers, certain cheeses and salami are good choices.
TIPPING
We handle basic tipping for our sleeping car and coach attendants, servers for meals and sightseeing tour guides. You should consider tipping for additional service, such as extra requests of hotel or train staff, or if you appreciate efforts of the local guides and bus drivers.
TELEPHONE SUGGESTIONS
Most hotels have instituted expensive in-room telephone charges, even for credit card and collect calls. We suggest that you check the cost before using this service.
TOUR DIRECTOR
The Tour Director is your personal liaison for our vendors (hotels, motorcoach, train, etc). Please advise them if you encounter any problems.
