Totally Trains from California

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Depart Los Angeles

Totally Trains tour members will arrive into Los Angeles throughout the day. You will board the Sunset Limited prior to its 3:00 p.m. departure.

The train features double-decker Superliner equipment. Relax in your private Roomette sleeping accommodations. Bedrooms, including showers, are available at an additional cost. Shower facilities for Roomette occupants are located on the lower level.

Once you settle in feel free to move about the train. You will want to go to the Sightseer Lounge car. Settle back and watch the scenery go by your window.

During the remainder of the afternoon, the train will roll through the lush California countryside. Then you’ll encounter the arid desert of western Arizona.

When you sit down for dinner in the diner you’ll be between Palm Springs and Yuma. The train continues to roll east as evening shadows fall and the sun drops behind the Arizona desert landscape.

Day 2: En Route / San Antonio

Early this morning you crossed the Continental Divide at an elevation of 4,587 ft., the point at which waters east of it flow into the Atlantic and to the west of it into the Pacific.

Following a dining car breakfast, you can take a train side stroll during our 25-minute layover in El Paso at 8:10. The rest of the day you’ll encounter the stark, desolate -- almost hostile -- land of West Texas. This is the sparsely-populated Rio Grande Valley. Tumbleweeds and arid lands surround our train. Many consider this beautiful.

You pass by Langtry where Judge Roy Bean enforced his own “law west of the Pecos.” This area was dealt with in the TV series “Lonesome Dove.”

You’ll be west of Alpine at lunch time and near Del Rio around dinner time. Just west of Del Rio you’ll cross the Pecos High Bridge spanning a magnificent canyon cut by the Pecos River 321 feet below.

You’re scheduled to arrive in San Antonio at 9:50 p.m.

You will overnight in your accommodations on the train in San Antonio. You are free to leave the train to take a cab to visit the Riverwalk or other evening activities.

Arrival into Kansas City is scheduled for 2:55 p.m. Kansas City Union Station was originally built in 1914 and completely renovated in 1999. It now attracts people from all over the world who marvel at the Grand Hall’s 95-foot ceilings and 3500-pound chandeliers. Union Station is filled with fine restaurants and unique shops plus a rail exhibit called the KC Rail Experience among other attractions. The elaborate Crowne Center Mall is within walking distance. There will be time for dinner and perhaps a movie.
