Day 1: Depart Chicago
The Grandest of Grand Canyon Tours tour members will meet the Tour Director in Chicago’s Union Station. The Willis Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the United States, is close by. Other Chicago attractions are a brief cab ride away.
Early afternoon we’ll board the Southwest Chief for the 3:00 departure. Relax in your reclining coach seat with leg rest. Roomettes or Bedrooms are available at an additional cost. All dining car meals are included. Enjoy a full-course dinner tonight in the dining car.
You will want to spend time in the Sightseer Lounge where the glass windows rise from floor level to the ceiling. It is a great place to view the passing scenery.
Day 2: En Route / Flagstaff
During the night we traveled across the state of Kansas. We will be near the Colorado border when you awaken. Today you will experience the excitement of the Santa Fe Trail as we cross New Mexico and Arizona. You will have time for a trainside walk when we arrive in Albuquerque at mid afternoon. Our arrival into Flagstaff is scheduled for 8:51 p.m. We’ll transfer the short distance to the Comfort Inn.

Day 3: The Grand Canyon
Have you ever wondered what it’s like at the bottom of the Grand Canyon? Today we’ll set off in luxury 4x4 touring coaches and enjoy a full day traveling to the bottom of the Grand Canyon! Relax in spacious, comfortable seats, as we travel along one of the last remaining stretches of the original Historic Route 66 en route to Peach Springs, Arizona in the Hualapai Nation. Here we’ll begin the 4000 feet descent to the bottom of the Grand Canyon! As you head down Diamond Creek into the depths of the chasm, massive canyon walls begin to tower over you. The landscape and vegetation changes as the elevation changes. Once we reach the bottom, we’ll enjoy a leisurely lunch and have time to enjoy the natural beauty along the banks of the Colorado River.
Later we’ll experience the opulence of a bygone era at Grand Canyon Railway Hotel. Dinner is included.

Day 4: The Grand Canyon
Following a buffet breakfast we’ll board the Grand Canyon Railway. The Grand Canyon Railway made its first trip to the Grand Canyon in 1901. Passengers of note included Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, William Howard Taft, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Clark Gable, Jimmy Durante, Doris Day, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates.
Our exquisite Luxury Dome Service combines the breathtaking views of the Observation Dome with the elegance of the Parlor Car. Upstairs you’ll view the surrounding scenery in the full-length dome with extra-large windows. Downstairs you can enjoy refreshments in the elegantly appointed lounge, which features a full bar, entertainment center and plush furniture. Enjoy complimentary fresh fruit, pastries, coffee and juice.
Our arrival into the historic Grand Canyon Depot is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. The Grand Canyon Depot is part of the Grand Canyon National Park Historic District and is a National Historic Landmark.
Upon arrival we’ll transfer to the Grand Canyon Village and our home for the night, the Maswik Lodge. The afternoon is free to explore. The canyon rim is about a ¼ mile from the hotel and there is free shuttle service to shopping, attractions and several scenic overlooks including Maricopa Point, Powell Point, Hopi Point, Monument Creek Vista and Pima Point.
This evening we will enjoy an included dinner at the Bright Angel Lodge.

Day 5: En Route / Winslow
This morning a step-on guide will join us on our deluxe motorcoach as we explore more of this fascinating area. This afternoon we will head out of the park; our destination is Winslow, Arizona and the famous La Posada Hotel, our home for the night.
The La Posada is one of the famed “Harvey Girl” properties. This hotel is acclaimed as, “The Last Great Railroad Hotel built in 1929 by the Santa Fe Railway for the Fred Harvey Company.” A list of the famous people who have stayed here reads like a who’s who of 1930s Hollywood.
The Turquoise Room restaurant was rated as one of the top three restaurants in the U.S. in the 2009 Condé Nast Gold List. Enjoy a farewell dinner hosted by your Tour Director!
Day 6: En Route
This morning we’ll board the eastbound Southwest Chief for its departure to Chicago. You’ll again enjoy your reclining coach seat with leg rest, all train meals and other amenities experienced on the westbound Southwest Chief. Sleeping accommodations are available at an additional cost. Breakfast will be served in the dining car.
You’ll want to take advantage of the fascinating scenery of Arizona and New Mexico our train passes through.

Day 7: En Route to Chicago
The Southwest Chief is scheduled to arrive in Chicago mid afternoon.
