Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Depart Chicago

California & Northwest Coastal Odyssey tour members will meet the Tour Director in Chicago’s Union Station. The Metropolitan Lounge will be our base in Chicago. The Willis Tower, one of the world’s tallest buildings is close by. Other Chicago attractions are a short cab ride away.
We’ll board the Southwest Chief for its 3:00 p.m. departure. Relax in your private Roomette sleeping accommodations. Bedrooms are available at an additional cost. Bottled water, juice and coffee are available in the sleeping cars. 

Once you are settled in, you will want to go to the Sightseer Lounge car, with its floor to ceiling windows, to view the passing scenery. Enjoy dinner in the dining car this evening.

Day 2: En Route

During the night we traveled across the state of Kansas. We will be near the Colorado border when you awaken. 

Today you will experience the excitement of the Santa Fe Trail as we cross New Mexico and Arizona. You will have time for a trainside walk when we arrive in Albuquerque at mid afternoon.

Day 3: Los Angeles

You’ll want to have an early breakfast, our arrival into Los Angeles’ beautiful Union Station is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. 

This morning we will embark on a sightseeing tour of Los Angeles. We’ll see Beverly Hills, West Hollywood and visit Hollywood’s Walk of Fame where you see the hand and foot prints of the stars! We’ll visit the Hollywood & Highland Center home of the TCL Chinese Theatre (formerly Grauman’s and Mann’s Chinese Theatres) and the Dolby Theatre (formerly Kodak Theatre), home of the Academy Awards. 

You’ll have time for an “on-your-own” lunch at the Farmer’s Market.

We’ll transfer to the Hilton Long Beach our home for the night.

Day 4: Embarkation

Breakfast is included at the hotel. This morning is free to explore or relax. At noon we’ll transfer to the beautiful Princess Cruise Line’s Star Princess®. Following a bountiful luncheon, you can relax or explore this gorgeous ship. The Princess Patter newspaper is delivered nightly to your stateroom. It will be your guide to the activities and events of the following day. Departure is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

Day 5: Santa Barbara

This morning we arrive in beautiful Santa Barbara. Called the American Riviera, Santa Barbara is a place where food, art, history, fashion, wine and sunshine mix to create a delightful and unique experience. The Spanish and Moorish style buildings add to the city’s charm. Santa Barbara’s Old Mission goes back to the 1700’s and was built to bring Christianity to the Chumash Indians. Many consider this to be one of America’s most beautiful cities.
Just outside of Santa Barbara is Santa Ynez Valley, home to numerous world-renowned wineries.

Sample optional shore excursions include: Santa Barbara by Trolley, Montecity Stars and History tour, Solvang and Wine Tasting, Coastal Whale Watching, Whale Watching (via a luxury catamaran), and Wine Tasting and a Picnic Lunch.

Day 6: Cruising

Ahh, now this is relaxing! There is as much or as little as you care to do. Activities typically include language classes, bingo, cruise staff-conducted trivia and sports (ping pong, putting and chipping, etc.) competitions, movie screenings (with freshly popped popcorn), art auctions and casino tournaments. And of course you can always just curl up with a good book as the blue Pacific Ocean drifts by.

Day 7: San Francisco

This morning we arrive in the famous “City by the Bay”, San Francisco. This is one of the most romantic and cosmopolitan cities in the United States. You’ll find everything from colorful history, museums, world-class shopping and superb restaurants.
You’ll want to see Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, Jackson Square, the Mission District, the Presidio and Fisherman’s Wharf.

With its picturesque sights and pungent smells, Fisherman’s Wharf attracts millions of visitors annually. You’ll have time to discover the excellent restaurants, markets, import houses and souvenir shops.

Day 8 : Cruising

Relax and enjoy all the amenities this ship has to offer. Relax in the freshwater pools and hot tub, try your luck at the Vegas Style Casino or shop at one of the many boutiques.

Day 9: Astoria, Oregon

The oldest American settlement west of the Rockies, Astoria offers a rich history for your exploration. Not far from Astoria is Fort Astoria, the Heritage Museum, Astoria Column and the Nationally renowned Columbia River Maritime Museum.

Fort Clatsop was the winter encampment for the Lewis and Clark expedition from December 1805 to March 1806.

Sample optional shore excursions include: Seaside and Cannon Beach Shopping, Historic Astoria and Fort Clatsop, Lighthouses and Long Beach, Fort Stevens, Oregon’s Scenic Coastal Highlights, Behind the Scenes and Wine and Seafood Tastings.

Day 10 : Nanaimo, British Columbia

Around noon we will arrive in Nanaimo located on the east coast of Vancouver Island. 

Nanaimo began as a trading post in the early 1800s. In 1849 the Snuneymuxw chief informed the Hudson’s Bay Company there was coal in the area and they built Fort Nanaimo Bastion. The town was mainly known for their exportation of coal.

Nanaimo is home to Petroglyph Provincial Park, with ancient petroglyph rock carvings and ruins. The park was a world-famous summertime tourist destination.
Near the Harbourfront Walkway, you can see the 1953 wooden tower. There are numerous shops and cafes.
Sample optional shore excursions include: Best of Nanaimo, Cathedral Grove & Coombs Village Market, Port Alberni Steam-Powered Locomotive, City Heritage Walking Tour, Wildlife and Waterfall Discovery Tour and or Horn Lake Caves Tour.

Day 11: En Route

This morning we’ll arrive in Vancouver, B.C. where we will disembark.

Upon arrival we will board our motorcoach and travel to Seattle. 

\We will arrive at Seattle’s King Street Amtrak station in time to board the Empire Builder. Departure is scheduled for 4:40 p.m.

Roomette sleeping accommodations and all dining car meals are included. Upgrades to Bedrooms are available for an additional cost.

After settling in you can enjoy the beautiful Puget Sound scenery between Seattle and Everett.

Day 12: En Route

Enjoy a delicious dining car breakfast and then head for the Sightseer Lounge car. Today a dramatic panorama of snow-capped Rocky Mountain peaks will begin to rise above the horizon, becoming increasingly dynamic as we approach Glacier National Park. The scenery is striking as we wind past waterfalls, river gorges and other sights. The rest of the day we’ll cross the remote flatlands of eastern Montana and western North Dakota.

Day 13: En Route to Chicago

Breakfast and lunch on the train are included. After we go through Minneapolis-St. Paul we head south along the west bank of the Mississippi River. The train winds between the river bank and high bluffs. Later in the morning, we pass through the picturesque Dells Country of Wisconsin. The Empire Builder is scheduled to arrive in Chicago’s Union Station late this afternoon.

At the conclusion of the tour some travelers will continue to home destinations. Others will spend the night in Chicago and continue home tomorrow.
